Today we will explore what sinusitis is, causes, and a few basic Ayurvedic treatments. The paranasal sinuses are a group of 4 paired sinuses within the bones of the face surrounding the nasal passages. They are the maxillary, frontal, sphenoid, and ethmoid sinus.
The maxillary sinus is the largest of the 4 sinuses, located on either side of the nasal cavity in the cheek bones. Ethmoid sinus is located between the eyes, nasal bridge, behind the bridge of the nose. Frontal sinus is located in the centre of the forehead. The sphenoid sinus is located separately behind the nasal cavity.
Sinusitis, usually involves 3 out of the 4 sinuses (frontal, ethmoid, and maxillary).
The sinuses are lined with a mucous membrane, and connected to the nasal cavity. Sinusitis is the swelling/inflammation of the tissue lining in the sinuses.
The sinuses are small air-filled cavities, in the facial bones, that have a hairy, moist lining. The sinuses are lined with moist, soft, pink tissue called mucosa. Small hair like projections which are called cilia, line the cavities of the sinuses. The air in the paranasal sinuses, drains into the nose, and is believed to get humidified while breathing, before it reaches the lungs. The sinuses warm, moisten, and filter the air we breathe, thus protecting the lungs.
Peenas, is the Ayurvedic term for sinusitis. The nasal cavity in Ayurveda is called Shirodwar, the entry point to the brain + is key for proper functioning of the brain.
The paranasal sinuses are filled with air, but the sinuses can get blocked and obstructed with various germs + fluids, which can grow and cause infections. Bacteria, fungi, and viruses can be the cause of sinusitis.
Common Causes Of Sinusitis
- Bacteria, viruses, that interact with the inner lining of the sinus, as the air enters the nose, while breathing, causing inflammation of the sinuses.
- Infections or allergic reactions, can increase mucous production in the sinuses, which blocks it.
- Other allergens, and environmental causes/pollution may be the cause of sinusitis. Allergies, hay fever. Also, structural issues/defects in the nasal mucosa, blocks proper circulation of the air, in the sinuses. Deviated nasal septum, nasal passage abnormality.
- Tooth infections, nasal tumours, nasal polyps, and various other medical conditions can be causes.
- The brain is the closest vital organ to these sinuses so, if the brain gets involved it can be very serious. Bacterial infection of the sinuses may infect the blood vessels + bones creating a brain infection.
Ayurveda states that the main dosha aggravated is the Kapha dosha, and the Pitta dosha causes the inflammation. Please contact me for a custom Ayurvedic diet plan for sinusitis for your body type/imbalances. Stop ingesting oily, spicy, heavy, very hot, and very cold foods, which do not digest well.
Basic lifestyle tips: go to sleep on time, get plenty of sleep/rest, drink lots of fluids, sleep with your head elevated, moisten your sinus cavities, rinse out your nasal passage, and apply a warm compress to your face.
