Thyroid Test

December 12, 2025

Low thyroid, or hypothyroidism, is one of the most common forms of hormonal imbalance I see.

Hypothyroidism happens because of poor conversion of T4 to the more active T3 hormone, or inadequate production of T4 in your thyroid gland.

Low thyroid, will cause severe fatigue, loss of energy, hair changes, dry skin, cold intolerance, constipation, general puffiness; and will make it hard for you to accomplish your basic daily activities.

This can also lead to fibrocystic breasts, PMS, menstrual irregularities, and increase your cholesterol levels.

Subclinical hypothyroidism is when you get your blood tests back, and everything is in the “normal,” range. But you have symptoms of hypothyroidism, so you feel like you have low thyroid issues.

Hyperthyroidism is when the thyroid produces too much thyroid hormone. This can cause increased heart palpitations, increased heart rate, breathlessness, diarrhea, insomnia, depression, nervousness, + anxiety.

Do you have subclinical hypothyroidism?

TSH and T4 tests are 2 common tests to check your thyroid function.

But I find that many times women who think they have thyroid issues, go the conventional medicine route, and they are told everything is in the “normal” range.

To me, this does not mean your thyroid is functioning properly.

Thyroid levels should stay in the middle of these ranges:

TSH

  • 0.4–4.0 mIU/L (if you have no hypothyroid or hyperthyroid symptoms)
  • 0.3–3.0 mIU/L (if you’re being treated with thyroid hormone)

T4

  • 4.8–13.2 mcg/dL

Free T4

  • 0.9–2 ng/dL

T3

  • 80–200 ng/dL

Most conventional medicine says the “normal,” range for TSH between 0.4 to 4.0 mIU/L, but I like to see TSH stay as close to 2.0-4.0 mIU/L. A higher level can indicate low thyroid function in many women.
