What Does The Thyroid Gland Do?
Your thyroid gland is a part of your endocrine system, considered the master gland that maintains your body’s overall balance. Your thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate energy levels, healthy weight + metabolism of each and every cell in your body.
Affects Many Systems & Functions ….
- Body Temperature
- Metabolism
- Breathing, Heart + Nervous System
- Cholesterol levels
- Weight gain + loss + Skin hydration
- Brain development
- Bone + muscle strength
- Menstrual cycles
- Blood cell production

Your brain sends and receives messages constantly to and from your thyroid in a feedback loop to keep your metabolism, weight, + much more in balance.
1.) T3 (Triiodothyronine) – T3 is the biologically active thyroid hormone that is primarily utilized by the body’s cells.
2.) T4 (Thyroxine) – T4 is the pro-hormone that is converted into T3 in the peripheral tissues, liver and kidneys.
Your brain sends chemical messages to get more T3 or T4 if needed. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), is released from the hypothalamus.
Then this triggers your brain’s pituitary gland to send thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), to your thyroid, which releases T3, and T4.
If your body needs less of these hormones, these messages from your brain to your thyroid are quieted until your thyroid hormones are in balance again.
The feedback loop between the thyroid and the brain are easily hindered for various reasons. Stress being a major issue.
Also, if you do not get enough protein, + too much carbs, that interferes with the conversion of T4 into T3. If you do not have adequate nutrients like B vitamins, iodine, selenium, tyrosine. If communication is hindered in any way, then adequate levels of T3, or T4 are not produced, released or converted.
If the correct amount of these hormones are not available for your cells, your body will experience symptoms of hypothyroidism, subclinical hypothyroidism, or hyperthyroidism.
