A lot of people ask me this question, of they should ingest apple cider vinegar for health benefits. Please read, and let me know your experience in the comments section!
Very common, and popular question that people ask me… is apple cider vinegar good to ingest? There are many claims that apple cider vinegar is good for numerous reasons like gut health, skin, weight etc…So, let’s get into why apple cider vinegar is not good to ingest by itself.
According to Ayurveda, apple cider vinegar is classified as “Kshara.” It has extremely hot, sharp, dry, and penetrating qualities. This leads to burning sensations, blocks the channels, and results to toxic build up in the body, causing chronic diseases. Ingesting Kshara, (apple cider vinegar) affects the heart, liver, intestines, stomach, skin, eyes, and hair.
Apple cider vinegar in cooking can calm Vata because it is sour, and warm, but aggravates Pitta, and can irritate Kapha.
Let’s explore the negative side effects of apple cider vinegar consumption:
- Causes electrolyte imbalance. Lowers potassium levels. May lead to hypokalemia.
- Very acidic in nature, pH of 3. Hard on kidneys.
- Acetic acid in vinegar causes loss of minerals, and tooth decay. Not good for bone health.
- Certain drug interactions with blood pressure medications, insulin, diuretics, and laxatives.
- Irritates digestive tract. Delayed stomach emptying, constipation. Irritates stomach lining, which can cause ulcers, pain, nausea etc…
- Aggravates esophagus, and throat. Can potentially cause esophageal (throat) burns, because of it’s acidic nature.
- The best way to consume apple cider vinegar is in food. Mix into salad dressing, marinades, etc..
- Not all fermented foods are good for your health according to Ayurveda.
